Jodhpur

Man, those maharajas (literally, king of kings) knew how to do the whole regal thing right.

Located at the intersection between the rich agricultural land of subcontinental India and the harsh desert terrain that (further off) becomes the Middle East, they were known for being incredibly tough warriors.

How tough? When the British came, they had so much trouble with these seemingly suicidal warriors (and their explicitly suicidal women), that they did to many of the rajputs what they did to the equally unstoppable gurkas of Nepal: hired them.

But: Jodhpur has the whole "open sewer" thing going on, which I'm not a huge fan of.

Oh, and while I'm thinking of it, here's a question for all you history/international relations buffs out there.

Look at topographical map of India. See how nicely it's formed? Really flat, and perfectly fenced in by huge mountains.

So why was India never united before the British?
