Syrian Border

We are a very lucky crew.

At the bus station in Antalya we somehow stumbled across a bus company offering a direct route to Aleppo (instead of the tricky transfer at Gaziantep or Antakya), and all for about 33 USD. It was a long ride.

But imagine you are a local merchant, and you know that busloads of travelers on a fourteen to sixteen hour journey will stop at your town for half an hour. What would you sell?

Cheap food and drinks, for one. Access to a restroom. Perhaps blankets and pillows. Maybe even low-revenue but high-margin items, such as cheap CD players.

What you would probably put near the top of your list is a child's doll that, when activated, lights up, emits a piercing high-pitched tune and dances a luau.

But at least one man would disagree with you.

Unbelievable merchandise aside, the border crossing was relatively painless. They pulled us and one other American to the side for some questioning and photocopied our passports, but when all was said and done, the border took just under 45 minutes.

And this man welcomes you to Syria.
